Bill Clinton Bags a Staggering $51 Million in Speaking Fees

After months of inexplicable delays, the Clintons finally caved in to the pressure to release their tax returns. CNN has the details:

Senator Clinton's Senate Salary: $1,051,606
President Clinton's Presidential Pension: $1,217,250
Senator Clinton's Book Income: $10,457,083
President Clinton's Book Income: $29,580,525
President Clinton's Speech Income: $51,855,599

The almost $52 million for speaking fees is simply breathtaking. Who would have known that being an ex-President would be so profitable? I'm sure people will now begin dissecting the details of their 2000 through 2007 tax returns. Of particular interest will be the cool $20 million payout from supermarket holding company Yucaipa that Bill scored with a minimal upfront investment.

Wow. I remember when the left went berserk after Reagan gave ONE speech in Japan for a million dollar fee after leaving office. And the sputtering apoplexy over Bush the Elder serving on a couple of corporate boards for much less was rather frightening.

$80 million between the book and "speaking fees" seems a bit high to me, but he is a former President and he did decide to cash in. Having made that decision, though, he really ought not involve himself in current political issues or elections. It diminishes him and the office.

Tim:

There's nothing Bill Clinton can do to diminish himself any more. His legacy is set in stone (and a little blue fabric).
