Senator Sam Brownback will bow to the inevitable Friday and withdraw from the Republican nomination race, Libby Quaid reports for the Associated Press:
Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, the Kansas conservative who struggled to raise money and gain recognition in the 2008 presidential campaign, will drop out on Friday, people close to him said Thursday.Money was a main reason for his decision, said one person close to Brownback who requested anonymity because the candidate had not yet announced his plans. Brownback is expected to announce his withdrawal in Topeka, Kan.
It's widely anticipated Brownback will run for Kansas governor in 2010, when his term -- his second -- expires. He had promised in his first Senate campaign to serve no more than two terms.
Read it all at the link above. This surprises no one. While he presented the rough outline of the image of a potentially successful candidate, Brownback was never able to fill in the blanks in such a way as to gain any significant support. His efforts to demonstrate he could "think outside the box" probably hurt, more than helped, his chances.
Running for Governor of Kansas seems much more his speed. Good luck, Sam!
Now if only Tancredo, Paul, and Hunter would also line up for the lovely parting gifts, we could get down to the business of choosing a nominee without all that noisy - but meaningless - distraction.

I already didn't like him but when he covered for the Democratic Governor who wanted to trash Bush over Guardsmen when the tornado hit Kansas, he pissed me off. And that's an unChristian sentiment.

Many of the 9 need to go home and run for seats in their own states. They will be great on the local or state scene. But, now we must get this nomination process down to at least 5 positions. Then after Feb. 5, we will see the real winner.

He was done when he finished behind Huckabee in the Ames Straw Poll, but really even before then. He simply doesn't have the charisma to draw support and excitement for his views.

He looks wizened, he is wizened, but, he is a pretty decent Christian. I've got to give him that.
