Senator John McCain revealed his own health care reform proposal Thursday, advocating a market-based approach including tax credits, Medical Savings Accounts, liability reform, and several other features which set it in stark contrast to the government-oriented programs being touted by Democrats. Aliza Marcus has the story for Bloomberg:
McCain, speaking in Iowa today, proposed give individuals a $2,500 tax credit and families $5,000. He also would end the tax break workers get for employer-provided health benefits, campaign advisers said in a phone call with reporters.* * * * *
``The symptom of the disease is the lack of insurance; the real disease is the cost of care,'' policy adviser Dan Crippen said during the call. ``John plans to introduce a lot more competition in the market.''
The campaign is still working on an estimate of the full costs of the plan, including promoting quality care and requiring providers to make public information about cost and medical outcomes of procedures, said advisers to McCain, a senator from Arizona.
Medicare, the U.S. insurance system for the elderly and disabled, also needs to come up with better ways to compensate providers, while not paying for preventable medical errors, the campaign said in a policy statement. Medicare has already started such programs, often on a trial basis.
