John McCain's third quarter fundraising numbers will come in better than some predicted, but probably still not good enough to allow him to avoid taking public financing, Jonathan Martin is reporting for The Politico:
John McCain will raise about $5 million for the quarter but still show well over $2 million in debt, according to two sources familiar with the internal tally.Though far below what rivals Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani are expected to report, the $5 million figure is better than what some in the McCain orbit had fretted about a few weeks ago. The Arizonan enjoyed a mini-surge of contributions following the solid media buzz he earned during his "No Surrender" tour last month.
Still, McCain's focus on doing retail politics instead of the sort of fundraising that his opponents did during the final, crucial month of the quarter (the only one where half your targets aren't on vacation) clearly cost him.
Read the full post at the above link. The official figures are being filed now and will be available in the next couple of weeks, but there isn't much to be gained by leaking incorrect numbers (it would be swiftly discovered, and the leaker discredited forever).
At this point, McCain clearly needs a lot of help to have any chance at all of winning the nomination. However, it isn't so unimaginable as it was only a couple of months ago. If Fred Thompson fails to impress after his long-awaited entry into the race, Giuliani's support continues its slow erosion, and Romney fails to hold his once-dominant leads in Iowa and New Hampshire, McCain will be there, with his inspirational personal story, national name recognition, and history of attracting independent and Democratic votes.
The Republicans appear to have the real horse race this cycle, barring a complete implosion by Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton (a prospect perhaps more likely than McCain coming back to win).

Some moonbat claimed McCain trashed Limbaugh over 'phony soldiers'. I didn't even bother to check.

Limbaugh was clearly broadbrushing the NYT 7 and other antiwar military out of frustration, then backtracked and researched Mcbeth and said it was all about him (McBeth) the next day.
Such a frickin', gelatinous pantload Rush is.
McCain vs Rush?
That 70 year old would grease the walls with that draft-dodging hippopotamus.

I suggest posters read the real truth about the smear of Media Matters and the Dem Senators. They smeared Rush and Rush has been carrying the water for the Stupid Party, the GOP , for years. Sorry, but if the BASE supports McCain, the Second Coming will have occured. John is not going to win the nomination because of the BASE. Neither will Ron Paul et al. It will be Fred, Rudy, Mitt and that is it. The GOP has to unite around one of these guys or face pacifist socialists like Dems with Hillary leading that charge. Anyone but Hillary my friends.

Sorry, bD, you drank the Koolaid on this one. Who but a moonbat would think Rush would call our volunteer military 'phony' soldiers. You suspended your usually excellent critical faculty for this one.
