Rudy and Fred mix it up

Crossfire has been minimal in both parties' primary races so far, but Fred Thompson "the not-yet candidate" fired a volley across Rudy Giuliani's bow yesterday, and took heavy return fire. Jonathan Martin reports at The Politico:

In a post on his blog today that reads a lot like the radio commentaries he did for ABC News, Thompson writes that when he was filming "Law & Order" he came to enjoy many aspects of The City -- "but New York gun laws don't fall in that category."

You see "they went after" (he doesn't initially say who the "they" is) gun makers via the courts, and now (here it comes) "the same activist federal judge from Brooklyn who provided Mayor Giuliani's administration with the legal ruling it sought to sue gun makers, has done it again."

* * * * *

"Clearly they're attacking Mayor Giuliani because he's the front-runner," said the unleashed aide. "The news here is the first 527 attack is from Fred Thompson and not George Soros, and Governor Romney's ad conveniently forgets that his trooper plan that never took effect did absolutely nothing to cut down on the number of illegals working in his yard."

UPDATE: Team Rudy kicks it up a notch, putting their criticism on the record and dinging Fred for only portraying a New York prosecutor in TV Land.

Read the whole post at the above link. Instapundit considers the return fire an "ad hom" attack, but it falls under the Tennessee home-boy defense, methinks.

Rudy was a real prosecutor in NYC, it turns out.

It's good to see Fred! acting like a real candidate. Now we'll see how he reacts to return fire. Very well, I suspect.

Favorite son of the Tennessee resident, Instapundit, Fred! might be, but I think Rudy's response about Fred!'s role in Law and Order is as weak as the LA Times' dredging up the role Fred! played as a racist.

Rudy's going to have to do something about his past stance on the Second Amendment. It may not be a top of the list issue in the northeast, but it's going to be in most of the rest of the country.

Even if Rudy wants to not make it an issue, sounds like Fred!'s not going to let him off that easy.

If gun control becomes an issue, Rudy's going to have to come out and say unequivocally that he will veto any legislation that even slightly diminishes the individual right to bear arms.

I'll support Fred. But, but... (Below threshold)

I'll support Fred. But, but, but, what has he done in his Senate time? ZERO. Rudy has actually run a city. Rudy was a real prosecutor and actually prosecuted many criminals. Rudy and Fred will make a fine ticket but please don't think that the Dems are shaking over Fred's entrace. He cannot win any Blue or Purple states. Only Rudy can do that. I would suggest that Pubs fire at the Dems and remember Ronaldus Magnus' 11th commandment . The Dems are our enemies. Not each other.

Say what? I beg to differ. Fred has not even got his campaign in full gear yet. I'll have to see some polling (other from the MSM) that says he can't win blue states before I'll give ya a pass on this one.

It's unpredictable. Fred has some of the 'likability' of Bill Clinton.
