Poll: Thompson, Giuliani tied for GOP lead

The latest Rasmussen poll shows a virtual tie between former Senator Fred Thompson (25%) and former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani (24%) among likely Republican primary voters nationwide. Rasmussen Reports:

The race for of the Republican Presidential nomination following the July 4th holiday looks a lot like it did before the nation's birthday party. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani essentially tied for the lead. It's Thompson at 25% and Giuliani at 24%.

Trailing the frontrunners at a distance are former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Arizona Senator John McCain. They're tied at 12%.

The full story is at the above link. Is it good news or bad news for Thompson that he is peaking in poll support just before formally declaring his candidacy? In any case, his cautious "pre-campaign" of published commentaries and speeches have garnered more support than the months of work and millions of dollars spent by the Romney and McCain campaigns. With undeclared candidates, of course, there is always the phenomenon of voter projection, though: people tend to believe the guy in the shadows stands for exactly what they wish a candidate might stand for.

These things will become evident shortly. For now, this poll is great news for Thompson, and not so great news for his opponents.

Give me a break -- Rassmuss... (Below threshold)
Gator Country:

Give me a break -- Rassmussen polls are notorious for being slanted -- this is the ONLY poll showing Thompson like this.

Most people haven't drank the koolaid of Thompson because just where does he stand?

He was the Nixon mole; did he or didn't he lobby for a pro-choice group; did he or didn't he fill out forms saying he was pro-choice in the first trimester? He weasel words like Clinton to explain his lobbying.

He was for illegals before he was against them -- check his voting record in the Senate and you will find he was in the back pocket of the Chamber of Commerce who was pushing amenesty.

Meets with the Union head of Firefighters right after the firefighters attack Rudy. Not smart even to some of his supporters because they know he was used as that group has NO intention of endorsing a Republican in the general.

Conservatives amaze me sometimes as they are mad at the WH but are supporting the WH candidate. Matlin, Cheney's daughter, Rove's #1 protegee Tim Griffin and others. How any Republican can support a Matlin candidate is beyond my comprehension.

Not to mention he looks old and mumbles a lot. He is now not getting in the race until September? Why, so he can avoid another debate where he knows people will be watching and he will get his head handed to him as slow as he talks and he won't have a script.

He raised $2M+ when the goal was $5M -- not a very good start.

Conservatives need to stop drinking the Fred koolaide -- cannot blog your way to be President. BTW, what is the deal with him wanting to do away with the Republican platform in 1996? Not enough space to list all the negatives.

What is a positive about Fred that would make him stand out as a conservative besides rhetoric because he is an actor?

Do I detect a note of hosti... (Below threshold)

Do I detect a note of hostility towards Thompson?

Gator Country, Good read!</... (Below threshold)

Gator Country, Good read!

And TIED with Ghouliani (an ESSENTIALLY weak candidate)? In a fantasy poll? BAD FOR FRED. Spin at will.

I like Paul, but beware Huckabee! (I know! But on down the road a bit.)
