If some young reporter wishes to make a name, a good question to throw directly at Rudy Giuliani and John McCain would be, "What contact did your campaign have with the other guy's before you both withdrew from the Ames Straw Poll?"
They pulled out the same day, within a couple of hours of each other. Now, maybe it's a coincidence, but as Lenny Briscoe would happily have told you, a coincidence is the moon being the exact size to block out the sun in a total eclipse. They happen once every few billion years.
McCain did NOT decide to pull out of Iowa that quickly after Rudy's announcement. Campaigns just don't function that quickly. Once they heard Rudy was dropping out, they would have called a meeting. Then they had to find McCain, get some private time with him to discuss it. He would want the best advice pro and con, then consider his options. Maybe a threat to national security could get handled so quickly, but not a sensitive political choice like this one.
These guys talked, I will wager. McCain probably insisted Giuliani announce first, and Rudy agreed. But they talked, or their campaign staffs did at the highest level.
The question is, will they admit it if asked? Will they squirm?
Could be interesting . . .
