« Democrat Allen to challenge Collins for Maine Senate seat | Main | Obama: "I can't do it." »

Senate Races

I have been unable to post much since the election, as I have been extremely busy. There has been more than enough time though to see where things stand in contest for control of the closely divided United States Senate in 2008.

As usual, the NRSC is doing a completely incompetent job. In Louisiana and South Dakota, probably the two best targets for the GOP in 2008, we still do not have a candidate. This of course is in spite of the fact that the Democratic incumbent are highly vulnerable and the GOP bench in both states are not thin.

Right now, it seems that the Democrats will be on the offense once again and have the potential to pick up Colorado, and perhaps one or two others (Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon).

Yup. The GOP seat... (Below threshold)

Yup.

The GOP seats in order of vulnerability:

Colorado (Udall v. Shaeffer)-- Slight Lean Dems
New Hampshire (Sununu v. ??)-- Pure Tossup
Minnesota (Coleman v. ??)-- Tossup
Oregon (Smith v. ??) -- Slight Lean GOP
New Mexico (Dominici v. ??) -- Lean GOP
Maine (Collins v. Allen)-- Lean GOP
North Carolina (Dole v. ??)-- Lean GOP

The only two real chances for GOP pickups are South Dakota (if Johnson does not run) and Louisiana. Right now, the Dems have the edge in both contests.

So at this point, I think the most likely outcome is a +2 gain for the Dems

We should have already had ... (Below threshold)

We should have already had candidates recruited for the open seats and to challenge the vulnerable incumbents. The RSCC has been incompetent for the last several cycles - including 2004, when we picked up a few seats under George Allen's chairmanship, but we had no strong opponents lined up to oppose the likes of Reid and Baucus.

It's not fair to blame the RSCC alone, though. Part of the problem is that Democrats have successfully used their vicious attacks on enough good people in government to dissuade others from leaving much higher-paying jobs in the private sector to enter the fray.

Here's something I posted a... (Below threshold)
