Michael Dennehy has resigned as Senator John McCain's National Political Director and is returning to New Hampshire, the campaign has announced. While the excuse of "leaving to spend more time with his family" is over-used and usually bogus, in Dennehy's case there is more to it, as John Distaso reports for the New Hampshire Union Leader:
Yesterday, Dennehy, 38, told the New Hampshire Union Leader and UnionLeader.com that he had stepped down from the campaign position to become a consultant for the campaign and would return to New Hampshire in June or early July.
The reason is purely family-based, he said. Primarily, he and his wife, Sarra, are doing what they believe is best for their son, Liam.Liam is a pre-school, 5-year-old with Down's Syndrome, who had been treated well at the Eastman School in Concord before the Dennehys left the state.
"They have teachers who are dedicated to kids with disabilities," Dennehy said. "The teachers there loved Liam and cried to see him go."
But the Dennehys quickly became unhappy with the program in Arlington, Va., where they rented a home after Dennehy was named to the high-ranking campaign post.
Read the entire article at the link above. The old "spend more time with my family" line most often is used to cover up a forced resignation or a voluntary one due to dissatisfaction with the boss, but this particular circumstance has the ring of truth.
Of course, it could just be coincidence. In any case, it's hard to see the departure from a campaign of a key national figure as a positive development.
