Senator Chuck Hagel is still considering running for President, but now he is putting the option of an independent bid on the table, as Nicholas Johnston of Bloomberg reports:
Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska said he would consider entering the 2008 presidential campaign as an independent.
An independent bid ``is possible,'' Hagel, 60, said in an interview with Bloomberg Television's ``Political Capital with Al Hunt,'' scheduled to air today. ``I don't ever foreclose any options.'' He will decide in the next few months whether to run for a third Senate term, pursue the presidency or leave politics altogether, he said.
Read the whole article at the link above. After the fiasco this spring when Hagel called reporters to Lincoln, Nebraska ("Home of the Best Darned Holiday Inn Continental Breakfast Buffet This Side of Omaha") for the "important announcement" that he had nothing to announce, my considered recommendation is for Chuck to choose the "leave politics altogether" option. Everyone will be happier and less annoyed.
In an interesting sidelight, I was surprised to see he was interviewed by Al Hunt. I thought Hunt had died - the body, I mean, since the brain had been dead for decades - but I suppose being reduced to interviewing the likes of Chuck Hagel on Bloomberg is pretty much the same thing, eh?

Why would Hagel run? Republicans don't like him and Democrats tolerate him only to torment Republicans.
Who will actuallty vote for him?
