Obama almost matches Hillary's total $$

If Hillary Clinton's record-setting 1st quarter fundraising take of $26 million didn't turn many heads, this should: Barack Obama's people are reporting raising over $25 million, nearly matching Clinton (who of course enjoys the fundraising machine built through two national campaigns and the help of the former President). From the Reuters story:

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama raised at least $25 million in the first quarter of 2007, his campaign said on Wednesday, just shy of front-runner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton who took in $26 million.

Obama, who has served only two years in the U.S. Senate and eight years in the Illinois state Senate, has trailed in some early opinion polls behind his colleague from New York, who on Sunday shattered previous party fund-raising records.

Read the rest at the above link. This is a huge number for a first-time national candidate to bring in. His campaign showed some sophistication, as well: they had floated a preliminary figure around $21 million - still very impressive, but a shade behind GOP money leader Mitt Romney's $22 mil. Now they come in only a million behind Clinton!

Very impressive number for ... (Below threshold)

Very impressive number for Barack Obama. He could take over as the frontrunner for the Democrats!

So after mulling this over ... (Below threshold)

So after mulling this over a bit I'm left with an interesting question...

How many of those $'s are from people that usually give to people with an (R) by their name?

I'd be interested in finding out how much money is being funnelled to him to ensure that Hill doesn't run unopposed and cruise for the next year (it was tried a bit in NY, with non-NY money coming in to support whateverhisnamewas, but it was pretty halfhearted). People are already publicly bashing Hill because he's in the race, otherwise I think they'd sit on their hands with their lips zipped and let her crown herself. Edwards is just too darn smarmy to attract the people Obama attracts.

My other main thought after seeing this concerned liberal donors...How divisive is Hill as a candidate if a nothing candidate like Obama is able to draw as much money is she is from liberals (pending review of who's actually giving to him, as noted above)? One thing I don't think I ever really considered was the possibility of liberals staying home if Hill were the D candidate. I don't think it would happen as much as we'd like, but it's possible that a minor 3rd party running anti-war could suck votes from her a la Ross Perot, doing just enough to sink her. I didn't think, in the end, liberals would abandon their queen, and maybe they won't, but a year and a half shrillfest between Hill and Obama's surrogates isn't going to help her any.
