Democratic budget "proposes the largest tax increase in history"

Writing at Townhall.com, Rep. John Campbell points out the defects in the current Democratic budget proposals, beginning with tax policy:

The Democrat's budget calls for a tax increase of every tax bracket, slashes the child tax credit, raises the death tax, and reinstates the marriage penalty. And this is just a sampling, there is more. In all, the Democrat's plan will cost taxpayers over $390 billion in the next 5 years. What is particularly frustrating about this ill-advised action is that the Democrats are blatantly ignoring the economic consequences and fiscal benefits that lower taxes have brought to the treasury the past few years. Revenue has increased in double digits the last two years alone because of the economic expansion encouraged by reduced taxation. This revenue growth has been crucial in reducing the deficit. The Democrats refuse to recognize this, though, and instead they just want to tax us to death. This is a recipe for disaster.

Read it all at the link above. Since the late Republican Congress did little to control spending itself, it should be noted that Rep. Campbell is a member of the Republican Study Group, a conservative caucus which opposed much of the excess spending then and now.

Thanks to Hugh Hewitt for pointing to this column.

Michael:

This is all hypocrisy because the GOP just spent more money in the past 6 years than anyone could have dreamed (on wars, on bloated Medicare Part D, on spending in EVERY department). And they financed it by borrowing from foreign countries instead of asking Americans to foot even a little bit of the bill. We all know that every tax increase is evil, and every repeal of a tax cut is also a tax increase.

How far down the laughable Laffer curve do we have to slide before we can increase taxes? Until all of our roads are in disarray? Maybe if old people are dying homeless and sick we can add a little tax for Social Security and Medicare...maybe.

So guys, what did you sacrifice for your country? Anyone lose a close relative in Iraq? Anyone buy some war bonds? Who helped rebuild New Orleans? I guess we just have to keep praying and God will take care of the hard part. In the mean time, I'll go take my tax cut and buy a third house.
