Surprising numbers, given Breaux's long-standing popularity and electoral success in the state.
Breaux can expect problems, though, about his residency. Louisiana law requires the Governor to be have five years of continuous residency in the state, and Breaux moved his legal residence after leaving the Senate. He's now a Washington lobbyist (as are, it seems, most living former members of Congress).
Even if Louisiana Democrats could win a court battle over the requirement, the controversy would damage Breaux severely.
Jindal lost only narrowly to Blanco the last time, and his reputation has only been polished since, while Democrats have lost a significant number of votes in the displaced population of New Orleans (which came largely from predominantly Democratic precincts). If anyone can beat him this year, it should be considered a huge upset.
