Rudy Giuliani continues to lead the Republican field, while McCain continues to slip, according to the latest poll released by Rasmussen Reports:
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) leads Arizona Senator John McCain (R) by eighteen points in the race for the Republican Presidential nomination. Giuliani now attracts support from 33% of those likely to vote in a Republican Primary. That's consistent with his level of support for three of the past four weeks, but down from a spike to 37% last week.
McCain slipped another point last week and is supported by just 15% of those surveyed. That is the lowest level of support measured so far for a man recently was presumed to be the frontrunner for the nomination. Thirteen percent (13%) now support former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) while 10% prefer former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R). No other Republican attracts more than 2% support at this time.

As McCain's candidacy continues to crumble, as he skips all of the important conservative group confabs early this year, and as he panders to Euro=peon sensibilities, the question in the back of my mind keeps getting louder and louder:
Is McCain planning to run as an independent candidate in 2008?
If he does a "blogger conference call" anytime soon, this is the question I would like someone to pose: "Will you support the Republican nominee in 2008?"
Simple and straightforward. Why he isn't being asked this question at every stop is another good question, but for the media types who are generally in his back pocket.

So what can we expect from McCain next? Will he start referring to himself as "America's Senator" or convert to Mormonism?

If McCain runs as an independent get used to the sound of President Hillary Clinton, because he'll split the non-moonbat vote much like Ross Perot before him.

If McCain runs as an independent, it won't be because he has anything against Giuliani. It will be because he realizes he can't win the Republican nomination, and believes he has a chance to win as a third candidate.
This reveals more of the massive ego needed to run for President in the first place - which applies to all of them, not just McCain, of course - than any political convictions.
His thinking might go: this is the first election since 1928 where neither a sitting President or Vice President is running for either party's nomination, and both parties have large fields of candidates. It's wide open, and approval ratings for the Democratic Congress elected only a couple of months ago have fallen back to the low levels of the Republican Congress they replaced, below even Bush's low ratings (which we hear about constantly). If an independent candidate has a chance to win the White House, this year will be the best chance in a long time, and probably for a long time to come.
