It has been several years since Bill Clinton came to SC - I believe he was still President at the time. Now, he is a featured speaker for the state NAACP fundraiser on May 18 in Columbia. Perhaps coincidentally - or, perhaps not - the event is the same week as a scheduled Democratic Presidential debate, as Roddie Burris of The State reports:
Former President Bill Clinton will be in Columbia on May 18 to speak to the state NAACP, the same week the first-in-the-South Republican presidential debate will be held here.
Clinton will be guest speaker at the NAACP's annual Freedom Fund Celebration, the civil rights organization's principal fundraiser.It is unclear whether his wife, presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., will attend.
Read it all at the link above. Something tells me Hillary will find time in her busy schedule to make this event.
In fact, there are better odds of her showing up for the NAACP gala than for the debate, given the rate at which Democrats are canceling their scheduled debates. So far, they have canceled three debates and held none, and SC's is still 60 days away.
Hillary is leading in the polls in SC, ahead of Obama with Edwards - who won the state's 2004 primary - trailing badly. Black voters make up about half of the Democratic Primary vote, and the former President is extremely popular among them down here. He has the ability to energize that key segment of the Party like no one else can.
