Chicago is Obama's backyard and Hillary's home town, but John Edwards is finding the pastures rather green there as well. Much of the money for all the Democratic contenders is coming from trial lawyers, who depend on Democrats to thwart any tort reforms which might threaten their cash flows. Lynn Sweet reports for the Chicago Sun-Times:
Edwards will headline a dinner at the Lincoln Park home of trial lawyer Joseph Power in an event expected to attract 50 or 60 people and raise an estimated $100,000. Edwards was a trial attorney before serving a term as a senator from North Carolina, and trial lawyers have been his most steadfast supporters.
While much of the local attention has been on Obama, the Illinois senator, the city has enough Democratic donor potential that Edwards has a Midwest financial director based here, Julie Reeder. For all the Democratic contenders, "We are a very large ATM for them," said Philip H. Corboy Jr., an Edwards supporter -- also a trial lawyer and one of the hosts of the fund-raiser.
