With three parties in the U.S Senate and the Vice President a Republican. Why do the Democrats get to be the majority? Shouldn't the Independents have to join the Dem. Party? Just voting with one party or the other does not make the members of either party.

Both "Independents," Lieberman and Bennie Stalin-Sanders, have announced they will "caucus with the Democrats." This means they will vote for Democratic organization of the Senate, which guarantees them a majority.
If Lieberman could be convinced to switch, or just to caucus with the Republicans, Republicans would retain control through Cheney's tiebreaking vote.
