2008 South Dakota Senate Race

I was looking over the results of a Mason-Dixon poll taken shortly before the mid-term elections, and it appears that the Republican Party would have an excellent chance of winning a Senate seat in 2008 if Governor Rounds runs for the Senate.

According to the poll, Democratic incumbent Tim Johnson has a 57%-16% favorable-unfavorable rating. Governor Rounds has a 59%-15% favorable-unfavorable rating.

There is no match-up between the two, but given the stakes for the nation, Rounds needs to run.

Rounds has already said that he will not challenge Johnson in 2008. And that was BEFORE the GOP lost its Senate majority on Tuesday.

And without Rounds, the GOP has virtually no chance of ousting Johnson, who is now in the majority. Democratic incumbents will be harder to defeat now that they have committee chairmanships.

The chances that Rehberg will challenge Baucas are now also reduced. Although Rehberg may find life as a minority House member sufficiently unbearable to risk a Senate run.

It's really too early to know whether SD (and a lot of other states, for that matter) are going to be competitive in 2008. If it's a bad year for the Dems then like it was a bad year for us this year, Tim Johnson is vulnerable. If the GOP stumbles though and/or the Dems are perceived to be competent, smart, and not so scary, then popular Dem incumbants are safe, even in red states. Recruitment matters, but without a strong nation GOP tide (e.g., 2004), talented candidates are not going to beat popular incumbents. So yes, I hope we can find the most talented, legitimate candidates we can, but I don't think we lost 6 seats this year due to poor recruitment.

The MSM's parading of the Dems' future congressional investigations of the administration's DOD contracts -- timed for maximum 2008 impact -- will help make the "culture of corruption" charge pervade the country again next time around.

This must be offset somehow, and plans must be made to do so.

Gary Rowell:

Tim Johnson won't lose - no matter who the Rs run against him. He has extremely HIGH approval ratings in the State of South Dakota. Do the Rs make a mistake of throwing money at this race? Might I suggest that worrying about what to do in Kansas if Pat Roberts retires. Leave South Dakota alone in 2008 and worry about keeping Thune's seat in 2010!
