Two polls have been released on the Maryland Gubernatorial and Senate races in the last 24 hours.
The first, by Rasmussen, reports that Governor Ehrlich trails his Democratic rival by 5 points - 50% to 45%. With leaners, Ehrlich cuts the gap to 3 points - 50% to 47%. The poll also reported that Michael Steele has also closed the gap and trails his Democratic rival by 5 points - 50% to 45%.
However, a Washington Post poll out tonight reports that Ehrlich now trails his Democratic opponent 55% to 45%. It shows Steele trailing 54% to 43%.
How do we explain the difference?
Well, it's a Washington Post poll, so one is well-advised to read the internals. The poll sample was 56% Democratic, 30% Republican, and 11% Independent. Of course, an exit poll in 2004 showed that the electorate in that Presidential election year was 48% Democratic, 30% Republican, and 22% Independent.
Basically subtract 6 from the Washington Post poll, and voila, you have essentially the same numbers.
Maryland will be crucial this year, and Republicans need to do everything they can to help Ehrlich and Steele. The former has been a successful and popular Governor who has brought new life to the state party by winning the office Republicans have not won since Spiro Agnew won it in 1966. The later has run a brilliant campaign against long odds and seems poised to possibly capture a Senate seat the GOP has not held for a generation.
Ehrich and Steele not only need our support. The deserve it.

Survey USA had the Senate race a tie a week or so ago. Steele has a genuine chance to win, especially after his strong response to the Michael Fox ad for Cardin, and Cardin's ducking of debates after his awful performance last week.
The Governor has a good chance at reelection, too. The main problem is we aren't too sure of the GOTV effort in MD. Since it wasn't a swing state with competitive races since the system was devised, it hasn't really been tested like those in closer states.

I have been very selective in whom I contribute to this year. Michael Steele is one those I HAVE contributed to...and WILL AGAIN !
I heartily encourage others to do so as well!!
