Did Ed Rendell think for even half a second before saying what he did in a press conference today regarding the Amish school shooting? When asked what could be done to make schools safer, Rendell said that when a person was determined to the point that they were willing to give up their own life, that it was hard to stop them. True enough. Sad, but true.
He took it a bit farther though and used the example of someone determined to kill the president. He said (paraphrasing here) that even with dozens of secret service agents surrounding him, if a person was willing to sacrifice their own life then it would be possible to kill the president. Also probably true, but what an odd thing to say. I just wonder how many crazies out there always assumed (as I did) that it would be almost impossible to get past the president's security. I wonder how many of them now, having heard that, would consider actually giving it a shot. Laura Lee Donoho was as taken aback by the statement as I was.

Every democrat in the country is trying to hype some nut to kill President Bush. Nothing new there. They would do it themselves if they weren't all gutless.

The line comes from an observation by Abraham Lincoln after they boosted his security detail (to two guards, I think) that "if a man were willing and determined to trade his life for mine, no number of officers would suffice to enjoin him."

It doesn't sound all that sinister to me...although you do have to wonder about people that keep talking about killing the President (ie books, movies, Alan Hevesi/Chucky Schumer). Did you hear the latest about Hevesi? His opponent busted him by making public the fact that he's been using a State employee to drive his wife around for years, even after the ethics board told him to reimburse the state and he didn't. His response? He told a State employee to use State equipment to go around and record all of his opponent's speeches. Homer got this guy right...d'oh! And yet he'll still get re-elected in this ridiculous state.
