2006 Texas 22nd Congressional District Race

Jim has an interesting take on the 22nd Congressional District race. While many Republicans feel this will be an automatic pick-up in 2008, I am not comfortable with letting a Democrat take the seat with the expectation of defeating him in two years.

Far too many times we've seen Democrats win congressional seats and keep them through astute delivery of pork and internal Republican incompetence. If Republicans make this race a referendum on keeping control of the House and run ads asking people to write in Sekula-Gibbs, and send cards to every registered Republican in the district with her name in bold letters, we'll hold this seat.

We have enough problems this year. We don't need to be throwing a seat in Texas of all states.

I agree it's a poor strateg... (Below threshold)

I agree it's a poor strategy to "win by losing," as some have even proposed for the House itself, thinking that once America gets a two-year look at a Pelosi-Conyers led House, they will drop them in 2008.

The allocation of limited campaign monies happens above my pay grade, of course. It would be equally futile to pump money into Texas-22 with the difficulties of a write-in campaign if that meant less to other competitive seats, particularly in the midwest and Pennsylvania, for example. I'm sure Mehlman and Rove and others are looking at much more data than I have access to when they make these determinations.

My biggest problem with it is IF Sekula-Gibbs was encouraged to enter this tough race so late as a write-in with the promise of heavy assistance from the RNC, RCCC, and other outside donors, and was then abandoned to her fate without ceremony.
