I have to agree with you: Cantwell is far safer than she deserves to be, given her lackluster performance during her first six years in the Senate.
It's not McGavick's fault, either. He might have been the candidate who could have beaten her - but not with such a late start. To beat incumbent Senators, you need to have a strong candidate in place no later than 18 months before the election. This gives them time to organize, raise money, get known around the state before the campaign frenzy begins, and establish themselves to avoid primary battles that could split the party.
Just as with Stabenow in Michigan and Nelson in Florida, Liddie Dole and the RSCC failed to find strong contenders early enough to make a difference.
