Minnesota 5th CD - The first Muslim Congressman?

With an impressive win over three opponents in yesterday's Democratic primary, Keith Ellison, a/k/a Keith Hakim, a/k/a Keith X Ellison, a/k/a Keith Ellison-Muhammad, is poised to become the first Muslim member of the United States House of Representatives. Mariga Lohn of the Associated Press "reports":

State lawmaker Keith Ellison didn't let questions about his past slow down his campaign to become the first Muslim in Congress. On Tuesday, voters responded to his liberal message calling for peace, withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and universal health care. He beat three contenders in the Democratic primary in a Minneapolis-area district long dominated by his party.

"You're not on your own," Ellison told supporters at an Egyptian restaurant in a speech that had the call-and-response of a revival meeting. "We are with you. We do these things together, y'all, and we don't let nobody break us apart."

Ellison, a 43-year-old criminal defense lawyer who converted to Islam as a college student, overcame questions about late parking tickets, overdue taxes and his past ties to the Nation of Islam. He has since denounced black Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan and was endorsed by a Minneapolis Jewish newspaper. He has also pledged to improve his personal record-keeping.

Read the rest at link above. It's a puff piece. Lohn slavers over him like he is her boyfriend. I am ashamed for the AP. At one time you had to be a reporter to earn their byline.

For a more critical look at Ellison's background and associations, consult Joel Mowbray's FrontPageMagazine.com article:

Both of CAIR's founders have given rhetorical support to Islamic terrorism. In a speech at Barry University in Florida in 1994, Awad declared, "I'm in support of the Hamas movement." Addressing a youth session at the 1999 IAP annual convention in Chicago, Ahmad praised suicide bombers who "kill themselves for Islam": "Fighting for freedom, fighting for Islam, that is not suicide. They kill themselves for Islam." (Transcript provided by the Investigative Project.)

* * * * *

In a written statement, Ellison's campaign said, "As part of Keith's overarching philosophy of peace, he supports reaching across the ideological and religious barriers." What barriers? The ones that divide those who don't support Islamic terror from those who do?

Keenly aware that Awad's embrace of Ellison is creating controversy, the campaign claims it was local Minnesota Muslims who invited Awad, even though it is Ellison who has known him for almost two decades. Communications Director Jim Leinfelder defended the relationship with Awad, noting that CAIR's executive director was at a Presidential gathering shortly after 9/11. But it was precisely because of that incident that outcry over Awad and CAIR skyrocketed. And after IAP shuttered in the wake of being found liable in a civil court in 2004 for supporting Hamas, focus on Awad has only intensified.

There's a lot more at the link above.

Powerline, based in the Twin Cities, has been on Hakim X Ellison-Mohammed's trail all along. They have at least forty posts on the man and his past and present associations in their archives. Read a few of them, and you will get the idea.

Are your additional names for him accurate? Or just bigotry?

If bigotry, should I assume that bigotry represents the larger community of conservatives?

Thanks

If you could be bothered to actually read the linked articles, you would know they are all names by which the gentleman has CALLED HIMSELF.

May I assume your moronic ignorance represents the larger community of moonbat idiots?

Questions like gadfly just floor me. How hard is it to look up?

These are not questions, but rather rhetorical devices to portray one's political opponents as evil, while exalting oneself into 'holier than thou' mode.

And of course, there will never be an apology for the insinuation that Jim (and the 'larger community of conservatives') are simple bigots.

There was a time in this world when the word 'bigot' was a serious charge - for it certainly is a serious evil - but the way the left throws these words around, especially in annonymous settings like the internet (how do you know Jim is not married to a Muslim, or has three adopted kids from Saudi Arabia?) has become a disgrace.

Jim, don't hold your breath for that apology.

Jim,

Great. Thanks for clarifying. And I apoligize for my baseless assumption. It was wrong of me.

You are absolutely right. I mistakenly thought that Jim was using a cheap rhetorical device. Turns out I was.

Again, I apologize for accusation/insinuation of Jim, and conservative, bigotry. It was unambiguously wrong.

beancounter:

Unfortunately Ellison is virtually guaranteed election to the Congress, although I am not sure he is any worse than the retiring Congressman Sabo who was about as liberal as possible. The district he would represent is primarily Minneapolis and inner suburbs and has the highest minority population in MN. Frankly I was surprised he won by such a large margin as some of these more local races are judged by the number of "lawn signs" which the runner-up appeared to massively outnumber Ellison. In addition the runnerup was Sabo's chief of staff and endorsed by Sabo. The unfortunate thing, not necessarily of the election, is that this district is starting to parallel Detroit inner city districts where race is the dominant attribute, not qualifications, background, etc.

Thanks, gadfly. Apology accepted.

beancounter ~ The 5th is one of the safest of Democratic districts, with over 70% registered Democrats voting in recent years (yes, I know MN has no formal registration by party, but primary participation over the last several elections effectively gives the same information).

It's not disturbing that the Democratic nominee wins in such a district. What is alarming is that someone with the history of this man could win the nomination.

If he were a "moderate Muslim," the prospect of his entering Congress would be of historical interest, of course. But he isn't.

Scrapiron:

CAIR is a part of the terrorists trying to destroy the free world, so now they want to put a member of the terrorists in the U.S. Congress. Wouldn't be the first, we have the KKK, the Communist, the Socialist and just plain idiots from Ca. and Mass., so it probably won't matter. The so called main stream democrats have practically destroyed the worlds image of the United States trying to soothe their ego, that has been busted by being such consistant losers. One more trip around with them (democrats) in charge and a third world country will look progressive compared to what they leave behind.

The Bull:

Scrapiron,

It is sad that you say such things about CAIR, you know nothing about it except all these bias claims you hear about it.

CAIR is not in any way a terrorist organization, I personally spoke to some of it's leaders and I am impressed with what they are trying to accomplish.

I would be more impressed if the CAIR leadership could find its way clear to denounce ANY specific Islamic terrorist group - Hamas, Hezbollah, al Qaeda, al Qaeda in Iraq, Islamic Jihad - but they refuse to do so.

Take that, with the history of their founders, and, well . . . you be the judge.

Paul:

Does anyone doubt that this foray into congress is part of a carefully crafted long-term Islamic plan? If you want to see the future, Look at what's happening in the Netherlands ~ all of Europe actually.

I fear for our once-great country, my friends. I fear for democracy, and I fear for freedom.

Without awakening and action, we are doomed.
