New Jersey Senate - Menendez strikes back

On Alex McClure's update on this race Thursday, commenter "Danny C" noted the US Attorney had opened an investigation into the ethical questions surrounding Menendez.

Now Menendez is firing back - at the US Attorney. Chris Mondics and Cynthia Burton of The Philadelphia Inquirer report:

U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie's decision to subpoena records of a lease deal involving Sen. Robert Menendez (D., N.J.) thrust questions of ethics and political corruption to the center of the election battle for his seat and prompted a furious Democratic counterattack.

At a speech in Atlantic City yesterday, Menendez, along with other fellow Democrats, denounced Christie for allegedly pursuing a political vendetta and interjecting his office into the election.

"We have seen an orchestrated series of leaks, bogus ethics complaints, and outright fabrications since the beginning of the campaign," Menendez said. "Suddenly, 61 days before the election, a prosecutor appointed by George Bush decides to take an interest and, not coincidentally, leaks to the press."

Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for Christie, declined to respond to Menendez's comments.
