There has been a lot of talk over the past week or so about all the GOP talent snatched up by John McCain in preparation for a 2008 run, and about the fact that he tapped the Democrats' bench. From John Hawkins:
John McCain has hired a new staffer for his future failed run at the presidency: Nicco Mele, a former webmaster for the Howard Dean campaign. What's the matter? Couldn't he even find a prominent Republican web guru, like Patrick Ruffini, that would work with him?
It should be interesting to see who some of the other GOP hopefuls bring on board over the next few months, as those currently working on the congressional elections become available soon. Candidates wanting to stay in the GOP camp still have some great talent available, such as RNC eCampaign Director Patrick Ruffini, who John Hawkins mentioned. There are also some excellent bloggers that candidates would be smart to snatch up while they still can. They just need to be sure to fully disclose any such relationships.
The internet proved an incredibly strong force in the 2004 Presidential election with the role bloggers played in exposing Rathergate and in helping spread the Swift Boat message, in addition to their role in steering contributions to candidates. I have no doubt that the blogosphere will be every bit as important, and probably even more so, in 2008. Smart candidates will develop a strong presence in the blogosphere as soon as possible.

I have my own theory why McCain is recruiting in the fever swamps.
I think he is already "hedging his bet" against being routed in the Republican primaries, and envisioning some sort of independent ticket, probably with Lieberman.
It's the ideal time for it, with no incumbent in the race for '08, and no "heir apparent" in either party - all the "frontrunners" have serious obstacles. As we know from Mark "DLC" Warner, if you throw a little money at the moonbat left, they will be your friend. Buying a few friends in la-la land now is probably pretty cheap, and could pay dividends for a "national unity ticket" in 2008.
Hey, I never said McCain wasn't smart. I only said he wasn't qualified to be President.

Jim,
McCain is not only NOT QUALIFIED, he is as DANGEROUS to American freedom in his own way as "Drunk" Kennedy, Flaky Kerry or Screaming Dean.
