Mexican Presidential Election

In less than a month, Mexicans will go to the polls to elect their next president, and this election will have very important implications for America. Felipe Calderon is the conservative in the race, and is sure to support NAFTA and other free market principles that are desperately needed, particularly by the poor in Mexico. Calderon performed great in the most recent debate, and that should hopefully help him open up a lead in this race. The other 2 canidates are both socialists in terms of their policial ideology. The canidate who is tied with Calderon, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) is sure not to adopt free market policies, and is sure to adopt a Hugo Chavez style foreign policy towards the Bush Administration. This is an extremely important election with far reaching implications.

Like you, Ed, I would prefer to see a pro-American government in Mexico. The Bush administration has to be concerned about this because if the pseudo-Communist, Chavez wanna-be wins, there's NO CHANCE of anything but a pro-enforcement bill passing in the Congress.

Hey, that may not be such a bad thing ;)

Let a neo-communist regime take over in Mexico, and you ain't seen NOTHIN' yet like the waves of people who will be coming here. They don't make fences that tall or that strong that would restrain it.

Reforming Mexico should be the top priority in a reasoned, multi-tiered approach to immigration. They should be growing as fast as China and India; with their natural and human resources, favorable climate, and prime location next to the world's biggest marketplace, they ought to be an emerging economic power.

Instead, they aren't even growing HALF as fast as Kenya - and Kenya is a basket case.

Market reforms, tax cuts, and privatization, coupled with a serious anti-corruption drive, could get the country on the right track - and, coincidentally, drastically decrease the incentive to head north.

Adjoran,

You are probably right, but taking the contrain point of view, they may not have elections at all. I mean who will cast a vote if they are all up here north of the border? :)

This is an important election. It is also a scary one for the U.S. We do not need more enemies to the South. We may eventually have to eliminate Chavez, but he can wait awhile. Right now he is scaring much of the rest of Latin America badly.

I DO NOT speak Spanish so I was glad to read that Mr. Calderon (the conservative PAN candidate)did well in the recent debate.
